About Michiko

My art practice focuses on the interplay between people and materials in different spaces. I create playful, large-scale, immersive installations that explore materials, light, shadow, projections, sounds, textures and movement. My work considers the way a particular environment may enhance certain behaviours and moods. It also focuses on the importance of play.

I offer bespoke artworks, installations and workshops. In addition, I incorporate photography, drawing and writing within my practice. I also provide creative consultation and project management. I aim to communicate a fresh viewpoint and promote creative troubleshooting and collaboration.

Much of my work includes developing and delivering creative learning programmes and workshops. I work regularly as a freelance artist and educator at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery, Tate Liverpool and the Hepworth Wakefield. I have also recently worked as Early Years Coordinator at the Whitworth and Early Years & Families Learning Curator at Tate Liverpool.

I have been fortunate enough to work with a wide range of people within my work. I am also an Early Years specialist and have developed and delivered award-winning Early Years and Families workshops, projects and exhibitions following the completion of my MA in Art & Design in Education at the Institute of Education, London (2008)..

Other organisations include the BBC, Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art,  Curious Minds, Manchester Museum, Lime Arts, National Museums Liverpool, the Just So Festival, the Bridgewater Hall, Chester Performs and a number of schools, children centres and community settings.

Michiko’s work is highly innovative and she always fully researches for each piece of work. She is flexible, adaptable and always keen to reflect on her practice...
— Ruth Edson, Community Development Manager, Manchester Art Gallery
I really enjoyed working with [Michiko] and the installation [she] created with the young people was fantastic. I was particularly impressed by how much they ‘owned’ the exhibition.
— Natalie Diddams, Schools Programme Manager, The Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester
Working with Michiko was a very positive experience for me as a Creative Agent as she was so clear about what she aimed to achieve, planned well and communicated in detail her aims and plans for each session alongside a detailed documenting and evaluation at the end of each session. Alongside that she is a creative, inventive, responsive and stimulating practitioner with a wide range of ideas, techniques and materials to draw on and a quiet passion for the work that she does.
— Annie Latham, Creative Agent, CP Hull / Arts Move
Michiko worked in a very open-ended, process based way and children thrived on this way of working, engaging in activities that are entirely driven by their own or a group interest. Creative child-led working that is valued, challenged and celebrated can have a massive impact on children’s emotional, social and behavioural development and we saw evidence of this on Midas Touch as a result of Michiko’s work. Documentation is a strong element of her work which she used as a powerful way of recording children’s process based learning.
— Dr Nick Owen, Aspire Trust
I just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU again for today!
The session you planned for us was absolutely brilliant.
Such a unique approach to exploring light, lines and media whilst combining and allowing the children to engage in the gallery installations. It worked perfectly with my group and they were all able to describe the different things they saw in the gallery when we returned to nursery.
We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the children have been talking about their experiences ALL day!
