Light Drawings emerge as a poetic testament to human existence, that focuses upon the connection between the photographer’s movements and that of the camera and the man-made ‘night lights’. This series of work also laments upon the fragility of this existence, as it would appear that every second that passes can never be perfectly recreated. Each image encapsulates a specific portion of time and space as a unique event. However, through the use of digital photography, Michiko attempts to defy this with the knowledge that, unless the ‘master copy’ is deleted, each image can be perfectly cloned over and over again – a typically human attempt to defeat the passing of time and subvert the laws of nature.
This openness to experimentation is important in Michiko’s work as she attempts to capture an essence of something that is otherworldly and just beyond our reach. By opening oneself up to the possibilities of chance, one is opened up to a heightened perception of a greater set of forces at work.
