The Stitches project is ultimately an ongoing process of map-making. Michiko has already travelled many miles on her Toyota sewing machine, fascinated by the way a simple row of stitches can break up a clean, smooth surface, forming a concentration of paths across previously uncharted territories. Michiko explores the way stitches alter the texture and flexibility of a piece of material or even paper. Furthermore, the stitches bind together different fragments and memories to create new mind maps, rather like an alternative patchwork quilt or magic carpet. The resulting textile pieces are transformed by the stitch as it progresses across the fabric. Sometimes the stitches move in straight lines, other times they wander into fragments of text, streams of unconscious and then perhaps suddenly accumulate at a point of interest.
