Welcome, you have arrived at the ‘Big Draw’ page which is part of the ‘Projects’ gallery. Please click on the photo icons above to view a sample of Michiko’s other projects. For more information about Michiko’s current work and activity, please keep an eye on the Blog!
The Big Draw runs throughout the month of October every year in the UK as part of the National Campaign for Drawing. Drawing events are held at different venues, big and small across the country to encourage and inspire people to pick up a pencil or any drawing tool. The Campaign basically aims to get ‘everyone drawing’ in ways that are fun and inventive. It also completely rejects the notion that some people can’t draw.
Michiko thinks this campaign is great and actively tries to promote drawing throughout the year, not just in October! She has already developed and facilitated two events: ‘The Big Splash’ at Victoria Baths and also a ‘Shadow Drawing’ Laboratory at Manchester Art Gallery. The images (below) show school children drawing in an empty swimming pool at Victoria Baths, Manchester’s former ‘water palace’. Different primary and secondary school groups explored the history and architecture of this beautiful, intriguing building with a roll of paper and different mark-making tools. Follow-up workshops also took place at the participating schools. Michiko worked in partnership with fellow visual artist Stevie Kandel, Salford University’s ‘Artists & Education’ and local project coordinators to develop these sessions.
